About Pete

Firearm Industry Leader

Pete Brownell is First Vice President of the National Rifle Association of America (NRA), and a Member of the NRA Board of Directors, Chair of the Membership Committee and Vice Chair of the Sport Shooting Committee. He has served on the Finance, Law Enforcement, Meeting Site Selection and Publications Policies Committees and the Task Force on Industry Relations/ Investment Oversight Subcommittee.

Pete also serves as the Chairman of the Board at National Association of Sporting Goods Wholesalers (NASGW). The NASGW represents the industry wholesalers and manufacturers who rely on two-step distribution to get products from the manufacturing floor to the retail store.

Businessman

Pete Brownell became the Chief Executive Officer of Brownells, Inc. and the privately held Brownell Family of Companies in 2012 after serving as President since 2007. For decades, Brownells, Inc. was a recognized niche-specific supplier of gunsmithing tools and accessories, but in the third generation of family leadership has grown tenfold into an international company known for firearm parts, accessories and ammunition. Mr. Brownell led numerous acquisitions including the global wholesaler Crow Shooting Supply, precision shooting instruments manufacturer and retailer Sinclair International, and the retailer Gamaliel Shooting Supply. The Brownell Family of Companies’ four brands serves shooters, hunters, gunsmiths and retailers worldwide.

An Iowa native, Mr. Brownell holds business and master’s degrees from the University of Iowa.

Outdoorsman & Conservationist

Growing up an avid fisherman and hunter, Pete has enjoyed a lifelong connection with the outdoors. He continues to participate in traditional outdoor sporting activities including hunting and camping throughout the Midwest and Western U.S. and hiking and biking with his family around the world.

His exposure to and appreciation for the outdoors has instilled in him a passion for conservation. Pete’s principle concern is that future generations will struggle to find places to fish and hunt. Therefore, Pete has volunteered on the following conservation organizations:

  • Grand National Quail Club
  • Pheasants Forever Strategic Leadership Group
  • Rocky Mountain Elk Club
  • Safari Club International

Philanthropist

Pete and his father Frank, longtime Chairman of the NRA Foundation, co-chair the Brownell Family Foundation. The Brownell Family Foundation is a charitable organization founded with the sole purpose of giving back to causes important to the Brownell family.

Among those causes are veterans and law enforcement support organizations, law enforcement agencies, pro-Second Amendment groups, as well as central Iowa-area schools and community projects.

Pete is a member of the NRA’s Prestigious Golden Ring of Freedom, by virtue of his donations to the NRA.
